Lahore History


Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan, which is the capital of Punjab. It is a historical city which is the cultural, political and economic hub of the province. Due to numerous historical buildings, mosques, tombs and gardens Lahore is very famous worldwide. Jahangir’s Tomb, Lahore Fort, Shalimar Garden, Badshahi Mosque and The Tomb of Asif Jahan are one of the few highlights of the city.

There are also many shrines of several religious scholars and Sufis situated in this city. They include the shrines of Hazrat Data Gunj Baksh (RA), Hazrat Mian Meer (RA), Hazrat Madholal Hussain (RA), Hazrat Shah Abu-Al-Maali (RA), Hazrat Syed Mauj-e-Darya Bukhari (RA), Hazrat Ghoray Shah (RA), Hazrat Shah Jamal (RA), Hazrat Shah Muhammad Ghaus (RA) and Hazrat Mian Wadha (RA). The tomb of Allama Muhammad Iqbal also known as The Poet of the East is also situated just in front of Badshahi Mosque.

Some historians describe the city of Lahore is 4000 years old however, the documented and authentic details have been dated back to at least 2000 years old. A Chinese pilgrim named Hieun-tsang has given a description on the city when he visited it in early 7th century AD. Lahore became the provincial capital for the first time in the reign of a Hindu Shahi king and after that the city was conquered by Mahmood Ghaznavi. After Ghaznavi many dynasties from Delhi ruled the city for numerous years. Then the Mughals rule the city from 1524 to 1752 and during this era Lahore found new heights of glory. After this a few dynasties from Persia came to rule the city and then Sikhs emerge as the rulers in 18th century taking over from Durrani Empire. Then the British rule took over from Maharaja Ranjit Singh after his death in 1839.

The city of Lahore is inhabited right on the eastern bank of river Ravi. The city of Lahore has almost expanded to double in area since past 2 decades. The current city of Lahore has developed with many modern housing societies and buildings. These societies include Defense, Gulberg, Allama Iqbal Town, Model Town, Johar Town, Wapda Town, Bahria Town and Green Town.

The worth seeing places of the city include Allama Iqbal International Airport, The Museum, Punjab University, Jinnah Garden, Shalimar Garden, Minar-e-Pakistan or The Tower of Pakistan, The Mall Road, Anakali Bazaar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park and Race Course Park. The current population of Lahore is about 10 Million.

Lahore is the metropolitan city of Pakistan with area of 1772 km square. Lahore is currently on number 30 in the list of most populated urban areas in the world. Lahore was also ranked as the second best tourist destination in the country by the British daily newspaper named The Guardian.

  7. History of Lahore and heritage is marvellous but people are reflection of the whole country. Overpopulation(govt did not do any thing in this regard), sewage system, no maintenence of old city except preservation of some old places, rampant burglary(and badmaashi), unchecked plazas, destruction of parks, degradation of roads except few. I think people to be blamed as much as govt. They will throw garbage at their will, pee whereever they want(lack of toilets). Lahore used to be famous for polished behaviour(say 80 years back), art and culture(both mullah and people responsible for cultutre destruction). Everywhere you can hear foul language(punjabi is spoken for that purpose), beggary at its worst, there are many other worse things happening here list is too long. This is what we got Pakistan for???. Please next generation! do good in everthing and try to make your place livable and memorable as it used to be…Please…I cry and beseach everybody…
